Removalist Tips for Moving Your Refrigerator

Moving Your Refrigerator

Refrigerators are some of the more sensitive appliances that you should exercise care when moving from one place to another. Here are some removalist tips from Emmanuel Transport for preparing your refrigerator for a move:

  • Begin by removing all the contents from your refrigerator. Everything from food to ice in the freezer should be removed to avoid having any object stirring and causing damage inside the fridge during the move. It is advisable to consume all perishable items ahead of time to avoid any wastage.
  • All shelves, drawers, and trays should also be removed to make the refrigerator not only lighter and easier for moving. This will also prevent your trays, shelves, and drawers from unnecessary cracking during the move. These parts should be wrapped in bubble wrap or towels and stored in a box during transport. Otherwise, you can apply non-sticky tape on the shelves if you don’t want to remove them for the move.

  • Don’t forget to unplug your refrigerator at least a day before the move to make sure it warms up before transport. Doing this provides the fluids and oils plenty time to stop circulating inside the compressor. You should take care to coil and tape the power cord into a compact roll to stop it from getting entangled in anything or incur damages while moving.
  • You have to defrost the freezer to make sure all the ice is melted. During the actual move, you can give the freezer a final wipe just to remove any final trace of ice that may be left inside the sides.
  • Close the refrigerator’s doors, securing them with rope and packing tapes, to keep the doors from swinging open when moving. Double door fridges should be tied together to ensure extra security. Failing to do this can result in damage not only to the refrigerator but also other objects in the truck.
  • Make sure that at least 2 people are with you to move your fridge and other heavy items safely. It is not good to lay the refrigerator down when moving. Keeping it upright ensures that its internal liquids do not move about excessively.
  • When you have arrived in your new home, do not turn your refrigerator immediately. Leave it upright for 3 hours before turning it on again. Older models tend to need 12 to 24 hours to settle back again before it can be turned on again. This is the best time to insert all the trays, drawers, and shelves back.
  • It would be best to hire removalists. This would make your shifting experience much more convenient and ensure your fragile goods would make it whole to your new home without all the stress.
